About Johann Hattingh
I am Johann Hattingh, founder of BrainSmart Assessments, and a dedicated School Counsellor and Lecturer with over 10 years of experience working with children, adolescents, and adults from diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
My professional journey has been shaped by a deep passion for helping individuals overcome challenges, discover their strengths, and reach their full potential.
I hold a Master’s degree in Child and Adolescent Psychology, with specialised knowledge in cognitive and neurodevelopmental difficulties. Over the years, I have worked extensively with learners experiencing academic, behavioural, and emotional challenges, supporting them in developing practical strategies that enhance learning, confidence, and resilience.
I am equally committed to working with adults who may feel stuck, overwhelmed, or uncertain in their daily lives, helping them gain clarity, direction, and renewed purpose.
A significant focus of my work involves trauma-informed counselling, where I support both children and adults in processing difficult experiences and building healthier coping mechanisms. I believe that many individuals carry unseen burdens that impact their ability to function optimally, and my role is to provide a safe, structured, and supportive environment where healing and growth can take place.

How are NBI profiles done?
What does a NBI profile report look like?
The NBI Brain Profile report is a 5 to 8 page report containing descriptions and explanation of the person's unique profile. It describes each quadrants (and dimension if the report was done for an adult/senior student) in detail.
It also contains a circle diagram/graph as an visual presentation of the report results.
What are the uses of NBI profiles?
Since our thinking influences how we behave, communicate, take in information, study, which careers would be appropriate and the like, the uses of NBI Brain profiles are vast!

How valid is the NBi Test?
The NBI™ was developed after extensive International research since 1980 on left/right brain functions. Kobus Neethling under the research guidance of Prof. Paul Torrance of the University of Georgia, first developed the NBI™ for adults before applying similar methodologies (as explained in the research documents) to develop a number of other whole brain instruments. More than 200,000 adults and children from a number of countries have been profiled by means of the NBI™. The results of research on the NBI™ have been very significant and ongoing research at a number of universities and institutes remains an essential part of whole brain science.
